22nd January 2010
These were the words spoken by Mr Yannakis Tittiris, Assistant Principal:
Dear students and fellow teachers, and management,
It was with great sadness of heart that we all heard the sudden news of the death of our former student Aria. We would like to extend our sympathy to his family and friends.
Aria was an active member of The American Academy of Limassol. He was involved in many activities in the school's life, especially in sports and taking part in cross country races. During the Christmas holidays my wife and I saw Aria shopping in the supermarket. He was full of energy and he enjoyed shopping with his friends. Aria had a dream to further his studies at University in the UK. He had a dream which was cut too short. He had a dream to do something with his life, to have an impact on the society around him and to make a difference as an individual.
Let me give tribute to some of our former graduates whom we have tragically lost in recent years:
Kyrill Vavilov in Moscow Russia, he was a businessman,
Rustam Avetisian, a pilot for Armenian Airlines,
Dr. Yiota Demetriou, Child Psychologist.
All of the above graduated along with Aria, they tried in their life time to make a distinct difference in their society and to their fellow human beings. Let us resolve that we, like them, will make a difference.
May they Rest in Peace.
There will be a Parent-Teacher Meeting for parents of students in Classes 1, 2, 3 and 4 on Wednesday 27th January between 5.30 pm and 7.30 pm in the Theatre. Progress reports will be available for collection at the meeting.
The Dr. Yiota Demetriou - The Dancing Queen Foundation was founded by friends and family of the late Dr Yiota Demetriou, whose life was cut short in a tragic accident on the 16th of November 2008, as a result of an irresponsible drunk driver. As a child psychologist, her ambition was to work with children and improve their quality of life. This ambition of hers acted as the driving force for close friends and family to set up this foundation and continue her dream.
Over the last year a few events have been organised by members of the foundation and we have also received generous donations. The American Academy, with the funds collected from the civvies day on Tsiknopempti donated EUR480.00 to the newly formed foundation, in March 2009. EUR 500 was given to a worthy cause, the Children of Kenya.
On Saturday 14th November 2009 a walk was organised by Dr. Yiota Demetriou - The Dancing Queen Foundation. The aim of the walk was to raise awareness of the devastating effects drunk driving has on the lives of other people.
A distance of 12.3km along the Limassol beach front (From Plus Sea Bar to the End of Molos) was covered by roughly 200 participants. The Motto of the walk was I'd rather Walk than Drink and Drive. Approximately EUR 20,000 was raised by the participants. EUR 9,733.92 of this has been donated to the Alma-Theotokos for the purchase of two wheelchairs for children with special needs. The rest of the money will also go towards helping children in need. The walk will be organised annually, every November.
On 21st December 2009 the foundation sold Christmas Decorations at the American Academy Christmas Fete. EUR 465 was raised by the generous purchases of the parents of the students.
The foundation would like to take the opportunity to express its sincere appreciation for the school's continuing support. Many thanks to the students, staff and parents.
In March 2010 a Child Psychologist will be holding a seminar at the American Academy's Dr Yiota Demetriou Theatre. The aim of the talk is to educate and inform people about problems concerning children, teenagers and their families. Attendance will be free but donations to the foundation will be greatly appreciated. The talk will be in Greek and the topic will be:
« Εφηβεία, στάδια και αλλαγές»
Η ανάπτυξη του παιδιού σε έφηβο εμπεριέχει αλλαγές σε σωματικό, γνωστικό και συναισθηματικό επίπεδο. Οι αλλαγές αυτές επηρεάζουν το ευρύτερο περιβάλλον (οικογενειακό/σχολικό) δημιουργώντας πολλαπλές προκλήσεις .
"Teenagers - Stages and changes"
The transition into teenagers and their development consists of changes in physical, educational and emotional level. These changes affect their day to day environment (family/school), creating many challenges.
In April 2010, The Foundation in conjunction with The English Learning Centre, are joining forces to put on the performance of Mamma Mia which will be staged at the Polemedia Theatre. In early June the Foundation will be organising an event which will be held annually, celebrating International Children's Day which is on 1st June. For more details on both events an email can be sent to info@dancingqueenfoundation.com.
